IDEAS & INFORMATION

Corbin Steel looks forward to helping customers with construction solutions and ideas by bringing to this page photos and plans involving structural steel and pipe. We hope to include water control projects for soil conservation and levee drainage, fencing and corral plans, listing of available specialty products, and a listing of specials we may be running on steel products.

When planning your livestock fencing and working areas you must consider the intended use before selecting material for the project. A perimeter fence around the roadside pasture is meant to be functional and attractive. these fences take little abuse and therefore can be constructed much lighter. Continuous fence panels work great here also if the topography does not roll too much.

Holding and sorting pens will require consideration for more strength if crowding is going to occur. A heavier top rail should be considered for those times when cattle try to climb their way out. Heavier posts should be considered along with closer post spacing.

Alleyways and crowding areas take a tremendous amount of abuse and it is frustrating when your system does not hold up in the middle of working a load of cattle. Having a system that works smoothly and without fail saves stress, injuries, and pounds on cattle. It most definitely saves stress on the people working livestock.

Pipe for fence rails generally range from 1" OD up to 2-3/8" OD with varying wall thickness from 1/8" to 1/4". Pipe for posts range from 2-3/8" OD up to 4-1/2" OD. Gate post size will depend on the gate size, use, and location.

Cost for material on steel pipe fencing will range from around $3.00 per foot for a lighter weight fence to around $6.00 per foot for the heavier fences. They are easier to build than most people think and can be customized to your needs. If built right, pipe fencing will last for generations to come.

Pipe that we sell for fencing will be new pipe. It may be a #2, #1, or a prime. Prime represents material that if you want we can supply mill test reports for. Usually only factories and manufacturers ask for these. The material is defect free but may be stored outside. A #1 pipe is generally a prime, or very close to it, that will not have test reports. A #2 pipe will have flaws ranging from a mid-weld (butt weld), to a slight bow, or maybe a bad seam. We can usually describe the blemish to you over the phone.

We do not sell used pipe for fencing for several reasons.

  1. Labor to reclaim smaller used pipe is too expensive and will make the used pipe cost close to new seconds or sometimes more.
  2. Most pipe will wear from the inside, especially on oilfield pipe, and a person can not see how thick the remaining pipe wall is.
  3. You do not want to have a post in the ground with half of the rails on and then find the material you are welding is paper thin.
